Natural Pointing Instincts:

A German shorthair puppy is naturally inquisitive. They typically chase most objects as puppies. While retrieving is not an instinct most shorthair puppies are born with, it is one of the many behaviors a GSP puppy can learn quickly when they are introduced to it at an early age.

AKC Shorthair Puppies:

We introduce all shorthair puppies for sale to retrieving at 5 weeks of age. We have found that a hallway, with all doors closed, is one of the best locations to introduce the German Shorthair puppy to this behavior. The small space created between you and the end of the hall provides the puppy with little lateral movement. It cannot run around you. The shorthair puppy can only move up and down the hall. Sitting on the floor, with your legs apart, wiil increases the size of the barricade.

Shorthair Puppies for Sale:

We start the German Shorthair puppies for sale at a distance of roughly 4 feet. We toss out a small dummy and then watch the puppy. The pup will generally charge the dummy and then start to mouth it. We call the puppy's name when this happens. The shorthair puppy will turn around, with their prize still in its mouth, and run towards you. The puppy is back before they know it. Now comes the important part. The dummy is not your prize. It is the puppy's prize. German Shorthair puppies are smart. They will quickly learn not to bring the dummy back if you take it away and hold it for any length of time. But shorthair puppies will learn that you too are part of the game if you fire the dummy right back down the hallway the instant you take the dummy from the pup. This is not the time to teach discipline! No sit, stay, fetch. This will only dull the puppy's desire to retrieve. This is a game. Games are fun. There will be plenty of time to put all the pieces together in the months to come. The job now is to instill the desire in the puppy that chasing dummies, bringing them back, and then chasing them all over again is fun. The only commands we use during this period are the puppy's name and fetch. Please indicate which name you have chosen when you purchase one of our German Shorthair puppies for sale. It will help their training if we can start them with their lifetime name. The training starts by calling the pup's name and saying fetch each time we toss the dummy. That is the extent of our commands. Most people wreck a German shorthair puppy's desire to fetch because they try to finish a dog too soon. Our German Shorthair puppies for sale come from intelligent pointer parents. I sometimes think the puppies think they are the ones training us. All they have to do is bring the dummy back to the nice fellow and he makes the toy fly again. What a great game. The pup gets all the fun and the human does all the work.
