Pelican Lake Fishing Tips:
My favorite time to fish Pelican Lake for Largemouth bass is early spring. This is the one time of the year when the bass concentrate on Pelican Lake, making fishing them extremely exciting. Key locations this time of year include; Halverson, Moose, Cree, and Jones Bays. The bass schools have a tendency to spread out throughout the lake by mid-May. Searching for them in the summer months is much like walleye fishing in the summer. Pelican Lake is a wind-orientated lake. The longer the wind blows on a particular structure, the more fish show up to that location. The main lake of Pelican Lake can be 5 to 10 degrees colder than the backwater bays during the month of May. The warmer waters the bays provide attract huge schools of baitfish in the spring. Hungry bass, fresh off their spawning beds, seek out these rich food sources. My favorite lure for these locations is a 3/32 oz jig with a 3x heavy hook that has a 7-inch rubber worm threaded onto its shank. Good worm colors include motor oil, blue fleck, and black. Cast the jig/worm combo to the backside of the weeds. Big bass love to prowl these locations in the spring. Key water depths are 3 to 5 feet. Set the hook hard when the line twitches. Do not expect bone-jarring strikes this time of year. Fish metabolisms are slower when the water is cooler. This is one of the best times of the year to catch a 6 pound+ bass on Pelican Lake.
