Gull Lake Ice Houses

The shoreline structures which extend into the lake are prime first ice locations on Gull Lake. Anglers not accustomed to Gull should be cautious, however. There is a good current flow coming out of Booming-Out Bay which can cause sketchy ice conditions at times. This is no place for large ice houses to be venturing about without the help of an experienced ice fishing guide. Key locations are Grassy Point, Cobbins, and the Hayfield bar. The best water depths are 12 to 20 feet depending on the day. The walleyes tend to be deeper on the brighter days.

Ice houses should be placed in such a manner to take advantage of several different depths of water. Straddling the break line ensures at least one of the holes in the ice house rental will be in the best depth of water. Active jigging usually works best during this time period. Swedish Pimples tipped with a minnow head or Jigging Raps are good choices. The best colors include chartreuse, pink, and glow. There are many evenings where one hole of the fish house rental catches the majority of the fish only to have a different one turn on the next morning.
