The walleye schools will relate to the first break on the Whitefish Chain. Key water depths range between 12 to 18 feet of water. The walleye will use the weeds for cove and feed just outside of the weed edges. A depth finder is a useful tool on the Whitefish Chain. Guides typically will not fish a location if they do not see walleye on the depth finder. Search the outside edges of wind blown structures with your depth finder. Pay close attention to the tips of points and inside corners of structure, These are key feeding locations for hungry schools of walleye. The key is spotting the first few fish which eventually give away the rest of the walleye school. Brainerd fishing guides spend years running underwater lake structure. This helps them memorize every nook and cranny of any given point It is amazing how many walleye can be in such a small area. The Whitefish Chain is definitely a spot lake. This means the key to success is location, location, location. Don't waste time fishing location where walleye don't appear on the depth finder. Life is short. The fish are either present or not. My favorite bait is a creek chub. The best method is lindy rigging. Use a three foot snell and a number 2 hook. Lower the bait into the school and hold on. The creek chub will let you know when walleye are present. A healthy creek chub will literally vibrate the rod tip when walleye are present. It is almost like a smoke alarm. Hold on tight. The bites are usually vicious. Let out some line and then take up the slack. Do not set the hook until the rod sags under the weight of the fish. Life is Good! This is walleye fishing on the Whitefish Chain at its finest.
